An author, a teacher and for over 17 years an active researcher into motivation in learning, Alan was until May 2011 a Principal Psychologist in Glasgow.

As well as books, Alan has written several staff development programmes including Promoting Positive Behaviour in the Primary School, Promoting Positive Behaviour in the Secondary School and the award winning Bullyproofing Our School. He had a weekly column in The Scotsman for several years and has been a regular contributor to the TES Scotland. He has served on government advisory groups, delivered a seminar for the Education Committee of the Scottish Parliament, presented at the Edinburgh International Book Festival and provided keynote addresses to the annual Education Scotland conference and The Scottish Learning Festival. He has also contributed to the inaugural conferences of City of Glasgow College and West College Scotland.

His first book, The Motivated School, was published by Sage Publications, London, in 2003 and has since been translated into Chinese. He was commissioned by the Scottish Government to produce a training programme for schools on motivation in 2005 and worked with the Scottish Further Education Unit (SFEU), now the College Development Network (CDN), in 2007 to develop The Motivated College training programme. He has worked with schools and education authorities in England, including Buckinghamshire, Hampshire and Bristol, Kent, the Isle of Man and Jersey. He has worked with Queens University Belfast and the National Behaviour Support Service of Ireland to disseminate his work in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. His second book, Motivating Every Learner, was published in May 2009. The University of Kiev is planning to translate the book into Ukrainian . Educators from Japan, New Zealand and Denmark have visited Scotland to study his work.

Alan's latest book Knowing and Growing: insights for developing ourselves and others is published through the Postcards from Scotland series from the Centre for Confidence and Wellbeing.




Fletcher

Donald runs his own software engineering practice focusing on educational software and has worked in partnership with Alan McLean throughout the development of the ring and all of it's associated application. A significant area of interest for Donald at the moment is the emerging remote pedagogy.
